In 1985, the Stuarts converted an acre of peat bog into garden, diverting springs to form streams meandering through a series of waterfalls into Bullock Creek. The creek-banks have been landscaped with blossom trees, cornus, maples, gunneras, rodgersias and Peltiphyllum. Drifts of phlox, Japanese irises, astilbes and azaleas tumble over rocks, which also edge the clear water, enhancing the plantings of hostas and primulas. Bridges cross the water-ways to paths edged with purple violas, leading past red native astelia and peonies canopied by dogwoods, parrotia and maples.
Early spring features a collection of hellebores with carpets of H. ‘White Magic’ and many new hybrids. These are followed by primulas, meconopsis, alpines and bulbs. A woodland path leads to an azalea bed with bright-coloured companion plants. Further spring highlights include groups of rhododendrons, camellias, and enkianthus underplanted with trilliums, wood anemones, primroses and Primula auricula. White wisteria hangs from the house balcony, while another climbs high into a red silver birch. Summer and autumn feature herbaceous gardens and a rosebed punctuated by schist rock columns. Maples, stuartia, cornus and other deciduous trees display brilliant autumn colour. The New Zealand cedar gazebo provides a lake view against a backdrop of snowcapped mountains. |
