Maori for "path of discovery", Arahura was built in 1991 on a scenic spot with views to the Southern Alps. Designed by Wanaka architect Sarah Scott, Arahura offers quality accommodation, each guestroom opening to the almost three-hectare (seven-acre) landscaped garden. Water features include a waterfall feeding the small lake bordered by a laburnum walk leading to a nuttery circle, as well as an ornamental pond edged with a bog garden. There is also a heated swimming pool and rose-clad tennis court. A full-size croquet lawn is surrounded by a young photinia hedge with four golden rain trees and a herbaceous border backed by a woodland area.
A focal point in front of the house is the Celtic knot garden with its box hedging. Spring is full of colour as the deciduous trees come into leaf and blossom, and the wisteria flowers. Summer brings the roses into bloom and the lavender bank. The bog garden and herbaceous border complement the shrub garden throughout the summer months. Many exotic trees have been planted with the emphasis on vibrant autumn colours. A large area has also been devoted to native planting, with a cabbage tree walk leading from it interspersed with indigenous flaxes. Paths connect the two garden levels, with stone terracing and steps down to the walkway around the lake. Arahura has a weddings licence and welcomes garden weddings. |
