Winner of local garden awards, The Threshold is a small urban garden in a sheltered secluded spot, with archways enclosing intimate garden rooms designed for solitude as well as socialising. Originally a gorse-covered slope, turned into a cattery for breeding Burmese cats, the garden was extensively remodelled in 1987. The conservatory opens to decking encircled by a brick planter featuring camellias, azaleas, roses, lavenders, an ancient lemon tree, and a small pond and fountain. This area flows to an upper wooden deck and lawn. An undercover barbecue area offers seating, with a gazebo surrounded by a bricked circle looking out to an ornamental dovecote, grape-covered pergola, and a fish pond with a waterfall. Derek has lit this area at night, with a brazier providing warmth in winter. Waterlilies and Japanese irises thrive in the pond areas and a shadehouse protects Noeline’s fuschias. The old rambler rose ‘Albertine’ disguises the hothouse, and almost 300 roses bloom everywhere, including in containers and hanging baskets, along with fuchsias and begonias. Pathways lead to the upper garden where the focal point is a cedar summerhouse, with views over Tawa. Along with the camellias and azaleas, Noeline’s rhododendrons and blossom trees predominate in spring, underplanted with hostas. Fruit trees and a small vegetable garden help to supplement the table. |
