Bremdale is a coastal country garden designed by Rose-Marie to create a romantic atmosphere and landscaped by Roger, featuring his manuka furniture, with stone and ponga walls. The Bremners took over Roger’s parents’ farm in 1978, extending the garden into a series of rooms separated by creeper-covered archways. Roses predominate, especially climbers, flowering in this mild climate for most of the year. Winter camellias are followed by drifts of daffodils and multi-coloured bearded irises. Rose-Marie bases her colour scheme on floral-art principles, each colour being enhanced by deeper shades with a touch of contrast. Soft pinks, blues, whites and lavenders with greens are the spring theme, highlighted by bolder colours. Foliage, too, is important, from broad-leafed acanthus to ajuga groundcover. There are numerous shrubs, interplanted with self-seeding annuals and perennials throughout. Fragrant plants also abound, from lilac trees to the herb garden. Birdsong from native birds is complemented by introduced birds in dovecotes and aviaries. Certified organic persimmon, kiwifruit and cash-cropping orchards adjacent to the garden provide vistas to the hills beyond. Children love the pond area with rustic gazebo set in spacious lawns, which contrasts with the densely planted areas around the house. |
