Greenhaugh, originally farmed in the 1870s, has been in the Atkins family since the early 1960s. This large semi-formal country garden was developed from 1986 to extend the colonial homestead’s half acre inherited from Les’ parents. Original trees include two mature lindens (Tilia), a copper beech, liquidambar and ginkgo, providing a wonderful canopy of autumn colour. Lynne loves the old roses rambling through the orchard and clothing a tennis-court length pergola along with clematis and wisteria. Austin roses are also favourites, featured in a salmon, cream and green area close to the house with Alchemilla mollis and cream Californian poppies. The roses, clematis, bearded irises and aquilegia steal the scene in spring together with the Kolkwitzia and many euphorbias. Then the perennial borders come into their own during summer, with shasta daisies, salvias, penstemons, geraniums, lavateras and lilies. In autumn, the drier Mediterranean gardens take over with their hotter colours and lots of silver and gold foliage. These include Helianthus, sedums, Michaelmas daisies and lavenders, with Japanese anemones featuring in the herbaceous borders. Winter brings collections of hellebores to the fore, then 1940s daffodils lining the driveway bloom. Local limestone is used in the formal pond areas, steps and paths. |
