Eden Garden, once an abandoned quarry on the slopes of Mt Eden, has been transformed since 1964 into a “Garden of Eden”. It has the largest and most varied collection of camellias in New Zealand. Rhododendrons, azaleas, vireyas and conifers also predominate, many of these areas underplanted with ferns, hostas and clivias, bulbs, fuchsias and hellebores.

The camellias are complemented in spring by cherry blossom, magnolias, Cedrela sinensis and a variety of maples. Bromeliads have naturalised in a glade which features a rock surround. A large collection of New Zealand natives includes pohutukawa, ponga, nikau palms, cabbage trees and flaxes which encourage birdlife, such as the tui, waxeyes and native pigeons. Other native trees and plantings include rimu, totara, kauri, titoki and puka.

Views of the harbour and Rangitoto Island can be enjoyed from the higher slopes. Eden Garden offers year-round interest with colour every season. The camellias start flowering late in March, filling the garden with colour, which continues from then until October. The subtropical vireya rhododendron collection thrives in the sheltered conditions and flowers throughout the year. The daylilies and hydrangeas provide added colour from December through to April, with the hibiscus flowering until July. There is colour and interest for all at Eden Garden.
